Library

Our school Librarian is Mrs Cathy Boyd.

Our school Library is open Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 4.30pm. It has an essential role in supporting learning by providing resources as well as access to 15 computers and study space that can accommodate 63 students. It is also a place of sanctuary for many students supporting both their social and emotional well-being.

We have a Year 8 Club in the Library every Friday at lunch-time. On this day Year 8 have sole use of the Library - to ask for book recommendations, to enter competitions, use the computers, play chess, or simply sit and chat to their friends in a supervised, safe and friendly environment.

Years 8 -10 have a Library lesson fortnightly. Our Year 8 and 9 pupils participate in Accelerated Reader which helps create a culture of reading through choice and helps students learn to love reading. Pupils read at an appropriate level, challenging them without being frustrated, ensuring that they can pass the quizzes and experience success. Our Year 10 students complete a reading challenge during their Library lessons. They get the opportunity to read 6 books throughout the year; choosing 3 from a suggested reading list and 3 novels of their own choice.

In St Louis we work hard to develop a love of books and reading throughout the school community. We have an annual Book Fair, author visits and we celebrate reading where we can through special reading events such as Libraries Week NI and World Book Day. We know the huge impact that reading has on your child’s communication skills, general knowledge and success across the curriculum. We are confident that St Louis Library will encourage and nurture a life-long love of reading.
