The Careers Department is responsible for all aspects of careers education, guidance and resources within the school. Our Careers programme is delivered to ensure that pupils are sufficiently informed to make confident decisions about their education and career.
Key Stage 3
Commencing in Year 10, all pupils undertake a coordinated sequence of activity based lessons to prepare for GCSE subject choices. Pupils will learn the basic concepts of Personal Career Planning (PCP) and will explore several possible careers choices within their individual PCP. In the latter part of the year, all pupils work on basic skills for employability.
All pupil work is carried out, monitored and marked within the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment. Every pupil is interviewed by a member of the Careers Department to review GCSE subject choices.
Key Stage 4
All pupils in Year 12 undertake an update of their Personal Career Plan in conjunction with GCSE target setting. This work is conducted on our Moodle VLE. Pupils also receive lessons on a range of important topics such as the Qualifications Framework, Interview Skills and Labour Market Information.
Officers from the Careers Service interview all students who require their assistance. During the year, all students visit the Ballymena area careers fair which is attended by all the local universities and major employers.
All pupils undertake a programme which involves guidance interviews, work placement, mock interviews, university visits and talks from visiting speakers. Particular attention is paid to the online process for university application, with all pupils receiving detailed instruction and assistance.
Our Year 13 and 14 students receive regular updates and reminders via our bulk email system. Year 13 pupils visit a major careers convention which is attended by numerous UK universities.
We have our own microsite thecareersroom.com. Pupils at all stages are able to download essential resources and undertake careers research from the site. The school careers room contains a wide range of printed and multimedia resources along with a networked computer.
The department maintains links with numerous institutions and agencies including universities, NI Careers Service, Sentinus and the Charter Work Experience programme. We work closely within the Ballymena Learning Together partnership to develop opportunities to share resources.
